From 1 July 2004, every new home approved in Victoria will need to achieve stricter energy efficiency and water conservation requirements in an effort to help save energy and water resources. The new program is flexible and provides builders or designers with three choices in how to achieve these aims:
5 Star energy rating for building fabric provided by an accredited House Energy Rater using FirstRate thermal simulation program; OR
4 Star energy rating for building fabric, plus water saving measures and solar hot water system; OR
4 Star energy rating for building fabric, plus water saving measures and a rainwater tank
From 1 July 2005 compliance will require a 5 Star energy rating for building fabric, plus water conservation measures and either a rain water tank or solar hot water service.
As a result of 5 Star, Victorians will enjoy new homes that are:
Improved quality and more comfortable.
Cheaper to heat and cool.
Environmentally sound.
Have greater re-sale value.
